Advanced Roofing Solutions has recently carried out the installation of the 3M Scotchkote EC661 & UV662 cold applied polyurethane roofing membrane at the Marcantonio Foods offices in Barking, Essex. The 3M Scotchkote system is designed and used primarily for the overlay of existing bitumen roofing felt, asphalt and profiled metal roof sheets. In this instance we were overlaying the existing Brindle red mineral roofing felt which although visually appeared to be in good condition had started to let rainwater into the building.

The Process involved the washing down of the existing roofing felt and the application of an approved fungicidal wash to eliminate the future growth of moss and Lichen on the flat roof surface. Next the 3M Scotchkote embedment coat was laid at a rate of 1 litre per square metre, then the 225 gm premier reinforcing mat was laid onto the embedment coat as reinforcement and a further 1 litre per square metre was applied. The system forms a fully elastic monolithic membrane with no joins or seams.

The embedment coat EC661 takes approximately 8 hours to cure at 20c, with one of the major benefits of polyurethane roofing resins being that they are moisture cured, meaning that if caught out when installing this system by a rain shower, that the product is not damaged and actually uses the moisture to promote the curing of the membrane. Once the embedment layer is cured the application of UV662 is applied at a rate of 1 litre per square metre, this provides the UV protection to the base layer and is pre pigmented in either dark, mid or light grey.

Advanced Roofing Solutions has carried out various roofing works for Marcantonio Foods using both 3M Scotckote and Topseal GRP fibreglass, cold applied, flat roofing systems.

3M Scotchkote polyurethane roofing membranes are the number one choice for commercial and industrial applications for roofs of any size due to the elasticity of the finished mebrane.

Topseal GRP flat roofing systems are the ideal choice to cover balconies and roof terraces. The standard 600 Gram GRP fibreglass covering is ideal for light domestic use, but when heavier foot traffic is the norm for example on hotel and commercial sites then we would specify a double top laminate. The double top can be either two layers of 450 gram fibreglass or on recent installations for Ramada Jarvis Hotels we have installed two layers of 600 Gram fibreglass reinforcement, providing a 1200 Gram M2 non slip laminate.

The photo below is of domestic GRP fibreglass installation of a property in Willesden, London. The transformation is clear in these before and after shots.

The old felt roof covering was removed along with the water damaged roof deck. The existing structural joists were rotten in places and had to be replaced with new treated timbers. A new fully insulated warm roof was constructed by Advanced Roofing Solutions and a 600 Gram GRP fibreglass laminate was installed.

Advanced Roofing Solutions GRP

This installation of new Topseal GRP flat roof coverings and GRP balcony coverings was carried out by Advanced Roofing Solutions as part of a major refurbishment of a property in Alderney Street, Pimlico, London.

The natural slate granules were applied onto the newly finished fibreglass flat roof to provide an anti slip finish as grp, fibreglass flat roofs can be very slippery when wet. Providing a safe surface should any maintenance be required in the future.

The next picture shows the wall abutment vent running around the perimeter where the roof meets the brickwork. The new grp flat roof was a cold deck construction which requires ventilation between the insulation layer and the roof deck. The abutment vent has a fly mesh installed on top and then is covered by a new lead flashing (not shown).

Topseal fibreglass roof coverings are the perfect choice for tricky detailing that would pose problems to most other flat roof systems. GRP flat roofs are totally seamless, the polyester resins are applied onto the new roof deck, then the fibreglass matting is laid onto the saturated roof deck boards, more resin is added at the correct rate and an aluminium consolidating roller is used to expel any trapped air. Once sanded down and topcoat is applied the new fibreglass flat roof is ready.

GRP Flat Roofs should be the obvious choice where up stand details are present. We have replaced just about every other flat roof system that is not a liquid applied system. The joints are under stress as the rise up an upstand and this is where they fail. Topseal grp flat roofs are a resin roofing system with fibreglass reinforcement. The system sets rock hard, is totally seamless, requires no maintenance and will last years. After all its not roofing felt, asphalt or rubber that is used in boat building to keep the water out, its “fibreglass”!

Topseal fibreglass flat roofs can be installed in many colours, there are approximately 100 colours which can be chosen from the B.S.4800 colour charts.

Cranford House School in Oxfordshire are the proud owners of this new Green Roof. The waterproofing layer installed by Advanced Roofing Solutions is a 1200 gram double top, fibreglass laminate.

GRP Green Roof Waterproofing

We specified 2 layers of 600 gram fibreglass reinforcement on this 200m2 flat roof (better to be safe than sorry)!

The flat roof was a cold deck construction, therefore there was a requirement for ventilation. This was provided by constructing a wall abutment vent which can be seen on the right hand side of the photo where the grp membrane finishes. There is ventilation on both sides of the new fibreglass roof with the left side being covered with a traditional lead flashing.

GRP Encapsulation of Pipe Boxing

This photo shows the new boxing of the pipework running along this wall. The grp laminate provides a completely seamless fibreglass roof coating with no joints to come undone. Unlike most other flat roofing systems, our grp roofs are formed using BBA approved Topseal polyester resins which are applied onto the new roof deck boards, in this case two layers of 600 gram fibreglass reinforcement are used. Liquid flat roofing systems means “no joints” no joints means no potential weak spots for the future where water may find its way in. We have replaced many bitumen, single ply and rubber systems that have failed on tricky up stand details, this is not a concern when using grp fibreglass.

We have just carried out some additional flat roofing works at Cranford House School and will try to update these pics to show the progress of the new living roof.

Being in such an exposed position, literally metres from the sea it was essential that the chosen waterproofing system was able to cope with anything that nature could throw at it.

Here are the photos of the Installation of four new roof coverings in Topseal GRP fibreglass at the Woodfield School in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. The roofs are all new built and cover the new extension that has been constructed by Grehan Contractors Ltd. All roofs will have a decorative simulated lead roll effect and be finished in dark admiralty grey. The installation of grp roof coverings was specified and the system that we used was the Topseal fibreglass flat roof system.

The first picture shows the base layer of the grp laminate as it is applied to the T&G roof deck.

Following the wetting out of the boards with the Topseal GRP flat roofing resin, the fibreglass matting is laid out with the dressed edge of the matting laid over the factory cut edge. A second layer of fibreglass roofing resin is applied over the matting and is consolidated with an aluminium paddle roller to promote an even dispersal of resin and to remove any trapped air from the newly laid grp fibreglass laminate. This can be seen on the next photo of the installation of this fibreglass roof.

The installer can be seen using the aluminium paddle roller at 90 degrees to the installer that is laying the fibreglass matting.

Once the grp fibreglass flat roofing membrane is laid the installers will measure and mark out the position of the lead roll trims with a chalk line as shown below.

The next part of the process will show the simulated lead rolls being installed onto the newly installed Topseal grp lamiante. It is very important that the lead roll trims are laid after the main grp waterproofing layer is intalled, this is to prevent the ingress of rainwater at a later stage following completion of the roof, if the lead rolls ever become accidently damaged the rainwater would not penetrate the underlying fibreglass roof membrane. In this picture you can see our installer reinforcing the lead roll trim with a fibreglass bandage after the trim has been adhered to the roof surface with a high performance polyurethane adhesive.

The new Topseal fibreglass roof is starting to take shape at this stage and will soon be ready for a sand down to remove any raised fibres that are lifted by the roller as the grp laminate is laid. Once sanded down the new fibreglass membrane is ready to have the Topseal topcoat applied to prevent UV rays from damaging the waterproofing layer and to provide the final colour, which on this roof was Dark Admiralty Grey.

Now the new grp fibreglass flat or low pitched roofs are finished and ready for the 25 year guarantees to be issued.

We would like to thank GCL who were acting as the main contractor on this new extension project at the Woodfield School near Hemel Hempstead for using Advanced Roofing Solutions for the installation of these new grp fibreglass roofs.

And would also like to wish both the children and teachers at Woodfield School many happy years making use of their new extension and roof coverings.

Hi, We have recently installed both Topseal GRP fibreglass roof coverings and 3M Scotchkote Polyurethane Roofing Systems at the Dartford Creek Flood barriers, River Thames, England. The installation of the roofing systems were part of a complete refurbishment of the flood defence system, with Birse Civils acting as the main contractor.

The Topseal GRP fibreglass roofing system was specified for the lower level accommodation areas and the 3m Scotchkote polyurethane system was installed directly over the existing asphalt on the main silos on either side of the creek.

It was decided on to use both GRP fibreglass and Polyurethane roofing systems on this project as they provide completely seamless roofing membranes without the need for heat. Both systems are BBA British Board of Agrement approved and are guaranteed for 25 years.

The lower level accommodation roofs had a new tongue and grooved roof deck installed and new Polycarbonate skylight domes . The GRP fibreglass roof covering had a dark admiralty grey topcoat applied and was finished with a natural slate granule to provide a non slip surface.

Topseal GRP fibreglass membranes are ideal for exposed sites such as the barriers here in Erith which take the brunt of the winds that travel up and down the Thames estuary. The winds here were so strong that at times the installation was stopped until they had subsided. Topseal GRP fibreglass roofing membranes form a rigid bonded seamless roofing system that can stand up to the forces that nature subject it to.

3M Scotchkote premier plus.

The 3M Scotchkote Polyurethane roofing system was specified for the covering of the existing asphalt roofs over the main silos. The system was decided upon to be the best solution available to encapsulate the 30 year old asphalt with, partly due to the fact that this system can be directly applied onto bituminous substrates without the need to install a new roof deck.

The 3M Polyurethane systems are moisture cured which meant that the installations could continue without interruption even while there were light rain showers. The polyurethane embedment is laid at a rate of 1 litre per sq mtr and is fully reinforced with a 225 gram per sq mtr CSM fibreglass mat. A second coating is applied at the same rate of a litre per mtr.The final layer us the UV661 topcoat to provide protection from the Sun to the base coat, this can be coloured dark, mid or light grey and can have a non slip finish.
